SURINAME
I visited Suriname in the spring of 2018.

The outside of the building (Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral) is painted pastel yellow and grey, but the unpainted cedar interior exploits the natural grains and patterns of the wood to impressive effect, and is also embellished with carved capitals, gates and doors.*

The focal point of the small town is the Fort Nieuw Amsterdam Openlucht Museum, which incorporates the half of the fort north of Wilhelmina Straat.*

This three-storey hilltop colonial mansion, the former residence of the director of Suralco, offers great views over the river and positively begs to be restored as a hotel.*

The oldest building in Paramaribo, Fort Zeelandia stands sentinel on the west bank of the Suriname River in the heart of the old city opposite Independence Square and the Palm Garden.*

Paramaribo's main attraction is the older inner city, which is literally scattered with pre-20th-century architectural gems...*

On 29 July 1902, the (mostly Hindu) workers at the sugar factory went on strike to demand better wages and working conditions, a tense and violent uprising that led to the infamous Marienburg Massacre wherein 24 workers were shot dead by the colonial military forces.*
