INTRODUCTION
The Career Awareness Kit brings students, teachers, and career resources together.
The kit enables students to contact actual businesspeople, tradespeople, and professionals listed in the Yellow Pages of their local telephone directory. Through sample questions and follow-up activities, the Career Awareness Kit aids students and teachers in gaining information, arranging excursions, planning guest visits, and taking part in activities associated with over one hundred different occupations.
The skills developed through this kit touch many subject areas including Guidance, Language Arts, Geography, Science, and Library Arts.
Below are a few applications of the Career Awareness Kit:
1. Guidance - a valuable tool in the planning and teaching of careers.
2. Language Arts - an important device for teaching basic research skills: collecting and organizing data, drawing conclusions, etc. It too is an important motivating force in providing a purposeful direction for student reading, writing, listening and speaking activities.
3. Geography - an important link in understanding the economic and social factors which shape a community.
4. Science - a guide to technology-based careers.
5. Library Arts - a useful learning centre activity.

1. Choose a subject from the Index or distribute one Career Topic card to each student.
2. Locate and study the Career Topic card.
3. Look up the Guide Words in the Yellow Pages of your telephone directory.
4. Choose any Listing under the Guide Words.
5. Record the name, address, and telephone number of the Listing.
6. Study the Basic and Related Questions.
7. Telephone, write, or visit the Listing you've selected to find answer to your questions.
8. If you telephone the Listing, ask for the Contact as indicated on the Career Topic card. Introduce yourself. Tell the Contact that you are a student learning about careers in the community and ask him/her if he/she would mind answering a few questions about his/her work.
9. Take notes for future reference or follow-up activities.
10. If you write the Listing, indicate the name, address, and Contact of the Listing on you envelope. In your letter include your name, address, and telephone number. This will allow the source person to telephone you if they haven't time to write. If possible, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
