​           My first visit to Guangdong province was in 1983 when I took the train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou (Canton).  
​
           Unlike today, Guangzhou had no buildings over two stories and bicycles were the main mode of transportation.  

           Foolishly, I drank water directly from the tape and concocted typhoid.  From there, I flew to Bangkok where spent six days in a public hospital but survived.
