The designers of the new networks will have to understand knowledge, people, and the societies they live in.  They will have to be dedicated to the idea of student-directed, individualized education.  They will have to understand the barriers to the flow of relevant information and how to reduce them without generating offsetting counteractions.  They will, above all, have to be able to resist the eternal temptation of subtly directing the studies of their clients instead of opening ever new and possibly dangerous doors for their investigation.

FOREWORD
Networks re-states what we believe to be some fundamental truths about the nature of learning:

i) Learning is a process inseparable from living.

ii) Learning may take place anywhere.
Street corners, gas stations, schools, taverns are all potential learning places.  How good a place is for learning depends on the learner, what he wants to learn, and from whom he wants to learn it.

iii) Everyone is a teacher.
A gas station attendant, a university professor, a new born baby are all capable of teaching someone something.  They are all, of course, capable of learning something from someone.  Everyone, therefore, is a learner as well.

iv) The learner is responsible for his own learning.
Each learner is capable of managing his own learning; formulating his own questions; tapping community resources; and assessing his own performance.

HOW THIS BOOK
WAS COMPILED

Over four hundred Toronto and area business, government and professional offices (randomly selected) were contracted by telephone and letter.  Each was asked to act as a resource for people -- kids in particular; to describe itself in terms of the skills or knowledge it could share; and to indicate ways it preferred to be contacted by the public. Each resource was then placed under an appropriate subject heading in context with questions and suggested activities.

HOW TO USE
THIS BOOK
Picture
1.  Choose a subject from the Table of Contents.

2.  Turn to the subject and follow the directions on the page.

3.   To find answers to your questions about a subject, contact one or more of the listed
resources.  Each resource has agreed to respond to people's questions if they in turn
follow the symbols in contacting them.

4. The Symbols:

p   means you can phone the resources.

w   means you can write the resource.

v   means you can visit the resource.

va  means you can visit the resource with an appointment.

a   means you can take part in activities.

g   means the resource will provide a guest to speak at your home, office or school.

5. Example:

ACCOUNTANT

John C. Newton & Co.
705 Progress Avenue #38
Scarborough M1H 2X1
ask for Audit Supervisor
438-6743
p(4 - 5 p.m.) w va a g

Meaning:

The Audit Supervisor of John C. Newton & Co., 705 Progress Avenue #38, Scarborough M1H 2X1, will respond to people's questions about accountants.  He will receive phone calls (p) between four and five o-clock in the afternoon or written letters (w); visits with an appointment may be arranged (va); people may take part in activities (a); or a guest may be arranged to visit your school or community centre (g).

6. If you phone -

Ask for the contact person (eg. Audit Supervisor).  Introduce yourself.  Tell him you want to ask a few questions about the subject (eg. accountant).  Jot down the answers to your questions.  If (p) is followed by a day or a time, call only on the only on that day or at that time (eg. between four and five o-clock in the afternoon).
7

IMPORTANT
7. If you write -

On your envelope include the name, number, street and city of the resource.  Also include the name or position of the contact person and your return address.  Enclosed a stamped, self-addressed envelope, if possible.

eg. John C. Newton & Co.
      Att: Audit Supervisor
      705 Progress Avenue #38
      Scarborough M1H 2X1

On your letter include your name, address and telephone number.
This will allow the resource to phone you if they haven't time to write.

8. If you visit -

Check to see if an appointment is required.  If it is and a telephone number is given, you may phone the resource and make an appointment.  If a telephone number is not given, you must write the resource.

9. If you take part in activities -

Obtain your parents' permission.  Since some resources may have unforeseen dangers it may be best to have an adult accompany you.

10. If you invite a guest -

A resource may decline your invitation if there are too many previous requests.

Since the data for Networks was compiled in the winter of 1978, changes in addresses, personnel, and telephone numbers may have taken place.  Check your telephone directory or call 411 for information.

It is assumed that many local businesses, government and professional offices not listed in this book would be willing to respond to people's questions about a variety of subjects.  Check the yellow pages of your telephone book.

The success of Networks depends on you.  If you can get answers to your questions without upsetting resources, Networks may be considered a success.  Please remember that business and professional people are generally busy and that they are willing to give their time at no cost only if you contact them in the way they have outlined.

If you have any problems using this book, as a friend, a parent, a adult, a teacher for help.

SUGGESTIONS TO TEACHERS
Picture
Networks is concerned with process -- the pursuit of knowledge through questioning.  This process has application in all realms of learning from Language Arts to Mathematics.  Below are a few suggestions:

Language Arts Programs -
Networks is a valuable tool for teaching basic research skills: collecting and organizing data, drawing conclusions, and so forth.  It too is an important motivating force in providing a purposeful direction for student reading and writing activities.

History, Geography and Science Programs -
Networks is an important source in the planning of lessons, excursions, and guest visits.

Library Programs -
Alongside the encyclopedia and dictionary, Networks is a helpful resource directory.

Guidance Programs -
Networks is helpful in the planning of career weeks.

Mathematics Programs -
Networks demonstrates how mathematics can be applied to real life situations.

Note: Although Networks is directed at people with a wide range of abilities, teachers may find it more appropriate for students in grades four to ten.

If you have any questions or criticisms regarding Networks please address them to:

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Douglas Spencer is author of Questions Kids Ask For Those Who Care To Listen (Simon & Pierre Publishing Company, Toronto) and Learning Spaces: A Handshake with the City (Community Planning Association of Canada, Ottawa).  He founded and co-ordinated People for Educational Participation (PEP) - a network of people discussing and acting on educational issues.  Ottawa born, he has taught with the Carleton Board of Education, studied with Dr. Ivan Illich in Cuernavaca, Mexico and has monitored educational innovation in California, New York, Massachusetts, and England.  Presently, he is working on a number of innovative educational projects in Toronto.  Mr. Spencer is available to co-ordinate educational projects and workshops.

Phileen Dickinson studied art and literature in Portsmouth, England.  Halifax born, she has worked as a jaquard weaving designer in Cambridge, Ontario and has attended the Ontario College of Art specializing in illustration and animation.  Caspian, a character of Miss Dickinson's imagination, popped into her head five years ago during a walk along an Irish country road.  Since then, she has accompanied her in her drawings, one day to star in his own book.  Cas-
pian, a type of leprechaun, has also been produced three dimensionally in doll form.
