An estimated 70,000 convicts were detained in the prison during its 60-plus years of service, most famously Henri 'Papillon' Charriere, a convicted murderer who was incarcerated there for 11 years prior to escaping to Venezuela, reputedly using a bag of coconuts as a makeshift raft.*
