Journey 9: The Sami
I filmed Emelia Premph's journey north to Lapland to visit the 6,000 Sami people left in Finland and their vanishing way of life. We camped in a typical Sami dwelling and went cross-country skiing and ice fish for our dinner. What did I learn from this experience? Journey 10: The San
Unlike most other African countries, where the San have perished or disappeared through war and interbreeding, Botswana and Namibia retain the remnants of their San communities -- barely 100,000 individuals in total, which may include many mixed San.* I spent a day filming two San villages: one portraying their lifestyle fifty years ago and one depicting their lifestyle today. Journey 11: The Jumma
Decidedly untypical of Bangladesh, both in topography and culture, this largely Buddhist Adivasi (tribal) stronghold is the homeland of the Jumma people. The whole region is full of the flavours of neighbouring Myanmar (Burma).* With a guide, I visited and filmed ordinary activities in four Jumma villages. What did I learn form this experience? Journey 12: The Maori
Maori today are a diverse people. Some are engaged with traditional cultural networks and pursuits; other are occupied with adapting tradition and placing it into dialogue with globalising culture.* For three weeks, I filmed Maori activities mostly on the southern island of New Zealand.
