1. Choose a subject which has something to do with your question OR look at the subjects listed in the book for suggestions. 2. Choose the name of a business or organization listed under the subject. eg. BOATS B. Y. Plastics Limited 52 Jamie / 226-1144 Mrs. Strike p w B. Y. Plastics Limited is the name of a business under the subject of BOATS. 3. You will notice symbols under each name: p means you can phone w means you can write v means you can visit va means you can visit with an appointment a means you can take part in the activities of the business 4 5. If you phone --
Ask for the person listed (eg. Mr. Marchand or Darcy of Marchand Electr. Co. / Mr. Pippy of Blue Line Taxi Co. Ltd.). Tell him your name. Tell him that you are using the Learning Spaces book. Then ask him your question. If "p" is followed by a day or a time, phone only on that day or at that time. eg. p (Mon. 2-4 p.m.) means phone only on Mondays between two and four o'clock in the afternoon. If you write -- Be sure to include on your envelope, the name, number, street and city of the business or organization. Use Ottawa as the city unless another city is given. Also include the person listed. eg. Marchand Electr. Co. Att: Mr Marchand 145 Besserer Street Ottawa, Ontario On your letter, be sure to include your name, address, and telephone number. If you visit -- Be sure to check to see if an appointment is needed. You may call to make an appointment if a telephone number is given. If you are unable to visit, you may ask the person listed if he would be willing to give a talk at your community centre, church, school, home, etc. If you take part in activities -- Be sure to get your parents' permission. Businesses may have unseen dangers. It may be a good idea to have an adult accompany you. 6. Since the information of this directory was collected in the fall of 1976, changes may have taken place. 6 |
What is Learning Spaces?
Where you can find answers to your questions. A directory of Ottawa businesses, organizations, and professional offices where people may ask questions, observe, or take part in activities. A "yellow pages" for kids. Why Learning Spaces? To encourage people to use their community as a resource in finding answers to their questions. Who can use Learning Spaces? Although this book is directed at kids and those who have kids, it is also a directory for those who are kids-at-heart, those who like to learn and explore. 3
5 If the phone number is wrong, phone information at 411 and ask for the telephone number of the business or organization.
If the person listed is no longer there, ask for the manager or the person in charge. If your letter is returned marked "address unknown", check the telephone directory for the correct address or phone the business to get it. 7. See Yellow Pages or See White Pages means look up the subject in the regular telephone directory. Choose the name of a business, organization, or item under the subject heading that is of interest to you. eg. Embassy of Sweden under EMBASSIES; Zion-Memorial United Church under RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS; etc. It is taken for granted that these organizations will reply to questions from people. 8. Carefully use the symbols listed after each business or Organization. If there is only a "w" after a resource, you can write the business only -- please do not phone or visit. 9. The success of this directory depends on you. If you are able to get answers to your questions without upsetting the businesses or organizations involved, then Learning Spaces may be considered successful. Please remember that business people are generally busy and that they are willing to give their time to you (at no cost) only if you contact them in the way they have outlined. 10. If you have any problems using the directory, ask a friend, a parent, an adult, or a teacher for help. 7 |

How did Learning Spaces come about?
A number of Ottawa and area businesses, organizatins, and professional offices (randomly selected) were contacted by a PEP committee -- Kathy Gillis, Lotti Heim, Jake Brooks, and Douglas Spencer. Each resource was asked to participate, describe itself in terms of its interest to people, and to indicate the ways in which it would like to be contacted by the public. No attempte was made list all resources for each subject. It is assumed that many local businesses and organizations, not listed here, would be willing to respond to people's questions. Consult the yellow pages of your telephone directory. Businesses, organizations, and individuals are invited to be listed in future editions. Contact LEARNING SPACES, c/o 787 1/2 Somerset West, Ottawa, Ontario K1R 6R3. Kids are invited to take part in the compiling of the next edition of Learning Spaces. Contact PEP at 235-4972. Learning Spaces is a PEP project. People for Educational Participation (PEP) is a non-profit network of people discussing and acting upon educational issues. Other PEP projects including the Learning Exchange (a learning system enabling people to share skills); the Storefront Learning Exchange (skill and knowledge demonstrations held in a variety of Ottawa locations); the PEP newsletter (welcoming educational articles from the public); the PEP library (educational literature available to the public); and PEP meetings (twice monthly discussions centred around participants' educational interests and concerns)> For information contact PEP, c/o 787 1/2 Somerset West, Ottawa, Ontario K1R 6R3 or telephone 235-4972. 37
Praise for Learning Spaces
"An opportunity for local businesses to play a meaningful role in the education of Ottawa youth." -Jean Biraben, Ottawa Board of Trade "Many contemporary educators have embraced the value of close community-school relatins, but in general have not acted to bring this about. Here is a book which in a sense puts the community in the student's hands by making him aware of a wide range of community sources for increasing his knowledge and skills." -Dr. Stephen Richer, Sociology of Education, Carleton University "Learning Spaces not only provides a passport to the curious;it also reminds us of a basic educative tenet. We heartily endorse all such endeavours." -Eric Fietz, Director of Youth Co- ordinating Council of Ottawa-Carleton "This book should help children to relate school work with the working life of adults. We hope that teachers will encourage this kind of learning in and out of school." -Education Section, Citizens' Committee on Children 39
